Obituary

Albert Brewer was born in Haughton, Louisiana and is the second born to Albert John Brewer and Lorethia Brewer.  He attended elementary school in his hometown of Plain Dealing, Louisiana.  At the early age of 10, he joined Calhoun Chapel C.M.E. Church and became one of Calhoun's most diligent young workers.  He then attended high school in Benton, Louisiana, where he graduated Magna cum Laude.

Upon graduation from Benton High School, he moved to Houston, TX to live with his mother.  His first summer in Houston proved to have lasting memories.  The summer of 1950 Ms. Betty Gee introduced him to his future bride, Miss Mary Womack.

In 1951 he was drafted into the United States Army, to serve in the Korean War.

On November 3, 1951 he exchanged marriage vows with Miss Womack, allowing the Rev. A.A. Lott, Sr. to perform the ceremony.  During his years of service to the U.S. Army, he attended Leadership School and later became a Squad Leader.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

Upon separation from the Armed Forces, in 1954, he decided to further his education by enrolling at Texas Southern University.  In 1958 he acquired a B.S. Degree in Industrial Education with emphasis in Electronics.  Being an ambitious achiever he continued pursuing post baccalaureate work at the Universities of Houston, Oklahoma State, and Rice University.

In 1953, he became a member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. O.L. Dawson.  Just as he was a diligent worker at the age of 10 for Calhoun C.M.E. Church, he was a dedicated worker of Ward Chapel.  Serving as Steward, Trustee, Trustee pro-tem, President of Choir, Church Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, Adult Sunday School Teacher and Director of Christian Education.  He served as First Vice President of Lay Organization (4 years), Chairman of 10 th Episcopal District Lay Finance Committee (8 years), Tenth Episcopal District Lay Organization President (8 years), Connectional A.M.E. Church Lay Organization Parliamentarian (10 years), Member of General Board (16 years), Director of Lay Activities,

Director of Public Relations for the State of Texas, and Coordinator of the Father and Son Banquet.  He was a delegate to the General Conference serving eight years on the Preliminary Inquiry Committee.  During his tenure on the General Board, Bro. Brewer was the only member from the state of Texas on the Executive Committee.  He was also Co-Chair for the committee to write a Disaster plan, which was adopted for the entire Connectional AME Church.

In 1962 he built a home for his growing family and a new site for his existing business, BREWER'S Electronics .

In 1963 Brother Brewer began work for the United States Postal Service as a part time Distribution Clerk and ultimately retired after thirty-eight years as Manager of Distribution Operations.  Throughout his life he managed a dual career as Management level employee for the U.S. Postal Service while acting as Owner and employer of BREWER's Electronics .

He was dedicated to his Faith, his Family and his Community.  He never missed an opportunity to outreach a helping hand.

As an avid traveler, Bro. Brewer and his wife have traveled throughout the United States including Hawaii and their travel excursions abroad include Africa, Bermuda, England, Germany, Holland, Israel, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Brother Brewer will live on forever in the hearts of his devoted and nurturing wife of 64 years, Mary L. Brewer; Children Gloria, Rhonda and Kevin (wife Camille); 6 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; loving sister Connie Green; brothers Alonzo (wife Rachel), Lee Arthur (wife Betty) and a host of relatives and friends.
