OBITUARY for DAVID EARL BARRETT
On September 9, 1959 in Corpus Christi Texas, the late Rev. Oliver Lee and Mrs. Melvia King Barrett Sr. became proud parents of a son, the fourth of their eight children, whom they named David Earl.
David confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized by Rev. Harold T. Branch, pastor of St. John Baptist church in Corpus Christi, TX.
David was such a kind little boy. He often got in trouble for taking his things from home to share with other children at school or in the neighborhood.
He grew physically and spiritually. He was a member of Sunday school, church choir, youth camps, boy scouts, various varsity sports and many family outings.
David received his formal education in the Corpus Christi ISD, graduated from Roy Miller High School and received a full scholarship to attend the University of Houston and played football.
David was an outstanding athlete in high school and was inductee into the Roy Miller High School Hall of Fame in 1993.
In 1982, David was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and eventually returned to Houston due to a career ending injury.
After recovering from his injury and disappointment of an NFL ending career, he found Mt. Vernon Baptist church. He united under the leadership of Pastor Kenneth Rose and became an active member. During his active membership with Mt. Vernon Baptist he served as a Plant Engineer, Armor Bearer, worked with Brother's Keeper and sang in the choir.
David was preceded in death by his father Rev. Oliver Lee Barrett, Sister Karen Denise Barrett, and niece Corrine Barrett.
David leaves to cherish his memories, mother Mrs. Melvia Barrett, sisters Melvia Cassandra (Claude) Tolbert of St. Louis, MO, Alesia Vausha (Preston) Adams of Greensboro, NC, brothers Kenneth Ray, Oliver Lee Jr. (Tamara) of Houston, TX, Phillip Joel (Suzanne) of DeSoto, TX, Aaron Reginald (Pamela) of Tampa, FL, three Aunts, three Uncles, four nieces and five nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
