Mother
Elois Lynell Williams Wooten was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, teacher, rancher and civil servant. Elois was born in Benchley, Texas on February 8, 1929. Her parents were Sedalia Adell Sadberry Williams and Richard Lee Williams, Sr. Welcoming her was older brother Richard Lee Williams, Jr.. Sedalia and Richard, Sr. had seven more children. Elois and the next oldest daughter, Joyce, had big responsibilities in the home. They worked many hours per week helping their mother with cooking, cleaning, washing, starching and ironing. High quality results were required.
Following completion of elementary school at Seals School in Robertson County, Elois attended and graduated from Kemp High School in Bryan, Texas. She enrolled in Prairie View A & M College at age 15, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics. During these undergraduate days at P. V., she, by chance, was assigned a lab partner named Otis Wooten. Years later, Elois stated that her partner was doing more flirting than school work. A beautiful romance developed.
Elois and Otis were married on June 24, 1949 at her parents' home. Their children Donald and Charlotte were born in 1950 and 1951 respectively. The family built their home in Crockett in 1949, but, lived and worked in Troup, Texas until 1957. While in Troup, Elois mostly stayed at home with the children, but, occasionally, taught Home Economics at Central High School. In 1957, the family moved to Crockett for good. Elois stayed at home for one year until Charlotte was ready to start first grade.
In 1958, Elois began teaching first grade at Ralph Bunche Elementary School. There were three first grade sections, and, that year, each had forty students. Whew! During this period, she attended graduate school at Prairie View, earning a Master of Education Degree in 1964. She remained at Bunche through the name change to Mary Bethune Elementary School until full integration put everyone at Crockett Elementary School in the 1970's. Her reputation as a teacher was impeccable. Each parent knew that Mrs. Wooten would make every effort to help the student learn. Early in her career, teachers would spend the day teaching, then, be tasked with gathering census data in the community after hours. That extra task in addition to grading papers, recording grades and completing lesson plans made for a grueling routine. Elois retired from teaching in 1984.
During the late 1950's and early 1960's, Elois was Den Mother for Cub Scout Den 1 in Crockett. Most scout meetings were held in the living room of her home. She worked very hard to get her scouts properly outfitted, organized and competent. The scouts were better off for having had the experience.
Elois united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Robertson County at an early age. At about 1960, she joined Bethel Baptist Church in Crockett. In the mid-1960's, she moved her membership to White Rock Methodist Church. Elois sang in the choir for several years, and, has served as Acting Sunday School Secretary for approximately twenty years.
Elois was preceded in death by her husband, Otis, father, Richard, Sr., mother, Sedalia, brother, George Riley, Sr. and brother, Maurice.
Her passing is mourned by son, Donald, daughter, Charlotte, grandson, Michon, brothers, Richard, Jr. and Herman, sisters, Joyce, Geraldine, Gloria and Barbara, sisters-in-lw, Doris and Mary, brother-in-law, Freddie and a great contingent of nieces, nephews, cousins, former students and friends.
