***************************************************************************
James Earl Hopkins, affectionately called "Blue," was born as the fifth child of eight to Varnell and Lizzie Hopkins on February 8, 1952. A native of Centerville, Texas, James attended Frederick Douglass High School.  After high school, James worked as a structural iron worker and was a member of the Local 481.  On April 3, 1975, he married Zelma Pearl Smith.  From this blessed union of 41 years, two sons were born, James Kendrick Hopkins and Dexter LaRon Hopkins.
In 1992, James moved to Columbus, Ohio with his family and became a professional carpenter, working in the trade up to his retirement.  He was well-loved and respected in the community and was a member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church since an early age.  Those close to him knew James had a passion for fishing (wanting to beat his Dad "Deacon" competing for who could catch the biggest fish).  He loved to hunt with his brothers every November; it became a family tradition.
Also, James was an avid Dallas Cowboys Fan and loved to race horses.  He thought he was the greatest cowboy ever, being able to manage any horse, no matter whether or not it was wild or needed to be tamed.
James was a dedicated and proud family man, strong father, husband, and brother. We will miss his jovial spirit, humor, and contagious laughter.  He was loved and will be missed by his wife, Zelma Pearl Hopkins, sons Dr. James Kendrick Hopkins (Patrice) and Dexter LaRon Hopkins, grandson Titus Lee Hopkins, mother Lizzie T. Hopkins, sister Delores Randle (Lafayette), sisters-in-law Geneva Smith (Joseph) and Beneva Davis (Melvin), brothers Leo Hopkins, Sr. (Lottie), Billy Hopkins (Pat), Donerall Hopkins, Sr. (Marilyn), Cruce Hopkins, Norman Hopkins (Pam), uncle Charlie Hopkins, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
James was greeted in Heaven by his father Varnell Hopkins, Sr., father-in-law O.D. Smith, mother-in-law Zetha Smith, sister-in-law Edriola Hopkins, brother Varnell Hopkins, Jr., and grandparents.
