Jerry accepted Christ early in life and united with Lakeview Baptist Church in Madisonville, Texas.  He later became a member of Pool Chapel Baptist Church.

He was raised in Madisonville, Texas and attended Madisonville Senior High.  He later attended Mainland College of Galveston, Texas.

He married Mally Srirasa. This union was blessed with two children.

Jerry joined the United States Army.  He also worked as a correctional officer, Walmart and Valero.

Jerry's hard working hands were called to rest on August 31, 2017 in Bryan, Texas.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Robbie Lynn Merchant; father, Oscar Bill Byrd; grandmother, Mary Davis Turner; grandparents, Robert and Thelma (Collins) Merchant; sister, Carolyn Merchant; brother, Paul Merchant; beloved nephew, Jeremy Merchant.

Loving survivors: son, Ramon Merchant of North Carolina; daughter, Ashley Merchant of Houston, Texas; brothers, Robert (Barbara) Merchant of Texas City, Texas, Johnny Ray Merchant of Madisonville, Texas, Earl Merchant of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Bill (Codi) Merchant and John Merchant, both of Madisonville, Texas.; Sisters, Thelma Faye Merchant, Remonia Merchant, Marie Merchant, Johnnie Nealy Merchant, Margaret Griffith. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
