He united with Friendship Baptist Church when he was 13 years old under the leadership of Rev. Hines. He maintained the membership throughout his life.

His school days were spent at Friendship and Carver Schools, but he received his G.E.D. from Austin, Texas.

He met and married Rutha Vault. To this union two sons were born, Johnny Earl (Bridget), James Nolan (Gail). Years later after her death, he met and married Mae Frances Griggs, who already had one son, Joseph R. Griggs, Sr. (Paula).

The love he had for his family and his warm smile brightened any given moment.
His love for the Lord helped him to be encouraged during illness and sadness. He loved traveling from church to church with his guitar singing praises for the Lord.

Deer processing for the community was one of Brother's goals. He owned and operated Brother's Meat Processing for over 50 years specializing in his famous sausage, for which he was very proud.
