Shirley Marie Young was born on June 6, 1955, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Wardell Young and Betty Jean Nettles. She was raised in Fort Worth and attended I.M. Terrell High School, graduating with the Class of 1973.

Shirley attended David Chapel during her youth, and as an adult she became a devoted member of Good Shepherd Temple of Praise in Fort Worth. She spent her life caring for others, working faithfully as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a role that reflected her gentle spirit and compassionate heart.

On April 22, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas, Shirley departed this life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wardell Young and Betty Jean Nettles; her son, Lauren Powell (RayVon); her sisters, Brenda Kindles and Vanessa Carroll; and her brother, Robert Young.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory her nephews, David Joe Cummings and Eric Carroll, Sr.; her nieces, MeChelle Carroll and Demetrices Johnson; grandchildren, Trenell Powell, Devante Ellis, Lauren Powell, Aaron Coleman, Myrekle Powell, Aniya Powell and Imani Brown; eleven great‑grandchildren, and a host of family, and friends who will miss her dearly.
