Theresa Jewel Lyles was born on May 15, 1962 in Palestine,
Texas to Hiawatha and Ruby Barrett Lyles. She was the
seventh of eight children.
Theresa was raised in the Mt. Prairie Community. She
graduated from Neches High School as Salutatorian in 1980.
She later attended Prairie View A&M University in 1983
receiving a marketing degree. After Prairie View she was
employed with the State of Texas as an Eligibility Specialist-
Assistant Supervisor for 15 years. She then was employed with
AT&T as a Customer Service Representative for 15 years.
She joined Mt. Comfort AME Church at an early age when she
graduated and moved to Houston, she joined Jones Chapel
AMC Church. She later joined St. Paul AME Church where
she attended until her demise. She was a member of the St.
Paul Steward Board where she loved counting the money and
was also a member of the Lay Ministry.
Theresa passed away on March 6, 2023 at Luke Hospital -The
Vintage.. She was preceded in death by her father, Hiawatha
Lyles Sr.; Mother, Ruby Barrett Lyles; brother, Hiawatha
Lyles, Jr.; Sister, Jennie Y. Smith.
Those left behind to remember sweet memories: brothers,
James A. Lyles of Dallas, Texas, Herbert L. Lyles of Houston,
Texas and Richard R. Lyles of Palestine, Texas; sisters, Eva L.
Reed of Spring, Texas and Erma L. Hogan of Houston, Texas;
uncle, Emerson L. Barrett of Fort Worth, Texas. A host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
