Remembering The Life Of Truman Lamb, Sr.
Truman Lamb, Sr was the third child of Stephen and Izetta Lamb. He was born on August 13, 1925 in the Hickory Creek Community of Houston County, Texas.
He attended the Daniel Belview School and the St. James CME Church. Later, he and his family moved to the Fairview community where he attended the Kennard Colored High School, and served as a steward at Fairview and Bethel CME Church. In recent years, he attended the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Kennard, Texas until his health began to fail.
He served his country in WWII as a Steward's Mate 1st Class in the United States Navy in China and Okinawa, Japan.
After returning to the states, he married Billie Blanche Foy on June 20, 1950. They lived in Houston, Texas and began their familly of four children before moving to Kennard. Truman became one of Nucor (Vulcraft's) first employees when the plant opened in Grapeland, Texas. He was a welding inspector and retired after 21 years. Throughout those years, he and his wife continued working to improve their family ranch.
A Kennard community activist and progressive civic leader, Mr. Lamb served as a member of the Kennard Independent School District's Board of Trustees for 16 years. As a part of the local school board, he experienced the rebuilding of the Kennard High School that was destroyed by fire. When asked how his years of attending school in a small community and working as a school board member influenced his life, he said, "My parents and teachers taught me to always do my best." Mr. Lamb worked and lived to be a blessing and a good example for others. He was a strong and dedicated family man for his sisters, brothers, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Truman's belief in community involvement led him to work with others in the establishment of the Kennard Water Board. He was also a volunteer firefighter during the time that Kennard purchased its first fire truck. He has been honored for his unselfish annual contributions to the "Celebrate Christmas in Kennard" activities. For years, he and his wife unselfishly allowed the parade marshals to use his land as organizational headquarters. He has received numerous plaques and awards in recognition for his contributions. Mr. Lamb was often spoken of as one who was good at working with a diverse group of people and that he had a kind and cooperative demeanor, standing up for the right things was his way of doing things.
Truman was proud of his family! He experienced seeing many of them precede him in death. He lived through the death of his parents, Stephen and Izetta Lamb; a wife of 56 years of marriage; Billie Foy lamb; a sister, Izetta Lamb Holmes; brothers: Maurice lamb, Sr., Moses Lamb. P. T. Lamb, Joe Lamb, Carl Lamb, Melvin Moore and Felix Lamb.
Daddy will be missed by four children: Truman Lamb, Jr. (Debra) of Crockett, Texas;Thurman Lamb (Angel) of Huntsville, Texas; Gwendolyn Lamb Wiley (Cleotis) of Katy, Texas; and Karen Lamb Baxter (David) of Houston, Texas.
Four siblings will miss his spirit and sense of humor: Stephen Lamb, Jr. (the late Frances) of Kennard, Texas; Katie Lamb Scott (Harry) of Berea, Texas; Carrie Lamb Davenport of Dallas, Texas; and Pearl Lamb Sanders of DeSoto, Texas. A special cousin, Webber Pointer of DeSoto, Texas will miss him dearly.
