Obituary for Velma Ruth Butterfield

Velma Ruth Butterfield, age 68, of Houston, TX, passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2024. She was born on September 21, 1956, in Providence, RI, to Aquilla Chaney and Q.B. Gavin.

Velma was the embodiment of love, kindness, and strength. She had an unwavering devotion to her family, always putting their needs before her own. Throughout her life, Velma shared her compassionate spirit with everyone she encountered. In the later years, she found great fulfillment in being a caregiver and companion, offering comfort and care to those she loved. But her greatest joy came from simply spending time with her family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

She is survived by her loving companion, Linda Arnold of Houston, TX; her son, Olanrewaju "Larry" Handley of Raleigh, NC; her precious grandchildren, Montrell (Massachusetts), Larry "Bubba," Taja (Louisville, KY), and Tyuss (Fayetteville, NC); as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who were dear to her heart. Velma was predeceased by her parents, Aquilla Chaney and Q.B. Gavin; her siblings, Jerry Chaney, Bernard Chaney, and Barbara Jolly; and her beloved grandson, Trent Handley.

Velma's legacy of love, compassion, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Her family and friends will forever remember her as a devoted mother, a cherished companion, and a friend whose warmth and kindness touched so many lives. Velma's love and light will continue to shine in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to know her.
