BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Willie Verleeta Wooten Benton was born February 25, 1919, to the late Howard Lincoln and Johnnie C. Morris Wooten in Houston County, Lovelady, Texas. She was the first of twelve children.
At an early age, she accepted Christ and united with Whiterock United Methodist Church located in the Whiterock Community East of Lovelady.
Willie Verleeta, affectionately known as "Sister", completed her required education at Center Grove School in Lovelady, graduated from Crockett Colored High School and attended Mary Allen College in Crockett, Texas.
During the same time, "Sister" became a mother figure for her younger siblings due to a change in family structure. Her expectations and caring spirit were well established and respected by all. These experiences along with her humble beginnings created a woman of excellence with genuine values and high ambitions.
To start new beginnings, Verleeta moved to Seattle, Washington and was joined by three of her brothers and sister, Robbie. During 1940, she moved to Ogden, Utah and worked in the war industry.
After moving to New York City in 1949, she met and married William Benton, and attended school to become a phlebotomist. In 1966, Verleeta returned to Seattle where she worked at Northwest Blood Bank until she retired in 1995.
In addition, she became a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church where she served as secretary for several years and remained a member until death.
Verleeta's ready smile and teasing manner, her love for family, friends, hobbies, and pets, her hardwork and Godly lifestyle secured her destiny. She made her transition on Sunday, July 5, 2015 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 96. A life well lived, a rest well earned. Preceding her in death were her parents:
Howard Lincoln and Johnnie C. Wooten; brothers: Howard Adolphus, Hayes Leon, Octavius D., Morris R. and A. G. Wooten; one sister, Robbie Marie Trigg.
Willie Verleeta Wooten Benton leaves to cherish her memory: a special devoted nephew, Kevin Anthony Trigg of Atlanta, GA; three sisters: Princella W. May of Houston, Maye D. Martin of Cleveland, MS, and Lawrence J. Beall (Floyd) of Houston, TX; two brothers: Burtis C. Wooten (Willa) of Lovelady, TX and Holloway Wooten (Sylvia) of Washington, DC; a dear, kind sister-in-law, Doris Brown Wooten of Seattle, WA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
